Being a semi-audiophile as well as a budget-conscious consumer just made my mind swirl.
So coming back to my question, which one of the two is worth buying?
However (keeping in mind of my Sony dislike), I don't feel the sony mp3 player is going to outlive most others based on repair experience with them. BUT a simple mp3 player that's inexpensive and if you don't need the video will typically be 'easier' in a way than the iPod in some cases. (You must be in britain since the sony model you mentioned is only sold there, least by that model #)
But let's look at it this way, the NWZ-A826B is a touch screen interface, the 4th gen iPod nano is a completely encased aluminum anodized casing with the glass even curved to the body design. Durability wise the iPod nano clearly wins this aspect.
The sony will play all the same music the iPod will (though the AAC has to be unprotected or it can't play it, meaning no itunes purchases without decoding), plus WMA, I don't know too many people who distribute in WMA though.
I also don't see any source that tells me how the music gets onto the Sony. If it's like some mp3 players, it would be nice if you can just simply drag and drop your mp3 into the player. (which seems to be the prefered method of people who 'download' their music). Where as the nano without some special 3rd party program will only be able to sync with iTunes and managed in that way.
Also the nice thing about the sony is the blue tooth capability, which will work wirelessly with bluetooth headphones if you can afford them.
But if durability is your primary concern, the nano wins on this.
(but far as a touch screen option goes, I still prefer my ipod touch, the nano however I wouldn't mind investigating alternatives much like you're doing).
