Punishment should serve only the purposes of either rehabilitation (of the convicted criminal) or simply keeping those that can't be "fixed" off the street.
It is not cheaper for the state to put someone to death, so the taxpayer's argument is irrelevant.
There are far too many cases right now where serious doubt comes into play.
you cannot say 'sorry' to someone who was wrongfully executed
That said, I believe in death. Abortion all the way through assisted suicide. But in instances of the government conducting prosecutions and the possibility of personal politics coming into play, we should pause and remove ourselves from the emotion of the crime in deciding an appropriate punishment. Otherwise, the mob rules.
