network shares, weird problem, can't figure it out

  • alright here's an interesting problem to figure out. i usually have my xbox connected directly to my pc and all the network shares worked fine. i recently got a nas enclosure so i decided to put everything on a router (computer, nas, xbox) so i could just put all my stuff on the nas and i wouldn't have to have my computer on to stream media. the nas uses samba, it works fine when i access it from my computer but when i put everything on the router and edited the xml nothing works. i can access the nas but i can't get past the first level of directories. whats even more strange is that i can't get onto my computer anymore. here are my settings:
nameserver is set to the router's ip.
i have all the network shares set up properly, and they don't use usernames or passwords so its just smb:\\192.168.0.102\ or whatever for the ip of the nas or computer.

the computer share asks for a username and password for some reason but it's all set up in the share permissions and security for 'everyone'
can anyone offer some insight as to why i can't get anything to work over a router but direct connection works fine?

  • i had the same symptoms as described but a different setup (similar in some regards tho) and i worked around the problem.

basically i had a partition mounted to a folder in winxp. i had that folder shared and experienced the same problem as you.
i could only view the top level and going into sub folders prompted for authentication. i even had files in that top level but they simply wouldn't play. (no error just wouldn't play from that location)

i got around it by assigning the partition to a drive letter.
after doing that it just started working. go figure!

i know this is not a solution for you but it may help you to work out what is going on.

  • ok. make sure in your network setting menu in xbmc that the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, make sure your default gateway and dns server addresses match up (make both of these the ip address of your router). if you connect to the internet through this router then you can find that number in your modem's properties menu. in the smb share menu make the smb ip address matches the ip address of your computer. make sure the smb workgroup name is the same name as your computer's workgroup. then go to all the folders you want to share and make them available for sharing. then click "start" "run" and type in "net user guest / active:yes". a command prompt screen should pop up for a split second then disappear. save the changes you made as a profile in xbmc. then reboot your box and in xbmc go to the media you want and it a folder should be available that's named "(smb) network" and you should see all of the folders you shared from you computer.

*note* i'm currently writing a tutorial on this so if anybody that has had this problem and fixed it and wants to help out please feel free to contact me. my contact info will be made available in my forum profile. :kickass:
