Temp Host forum to eventually use DNS..using legal copy...

  • I am setting up a (legal of course) copy of vBulletin. However I am working on the new host before I switch the DNS to the new host. I want vBulletin to know that the new host address is temporarily what it is (as I am sure vbulletin sends a signal from the install/admin page to track illegal copies)
so that I'm not sending any big bad red flags.

I would like to see an option when first logging in to vbulletin members page for a 2nd host should we be a new webmaster taking over and changing hosts.

Am I fine for the week until I switch DNS in regards to vBulletin/you folks? Will I have issues if the url of the new host is the domain of the host itself before I switch it when I set things up? I can not switch the DNS to the new host until things are setup and ready as the client can not have long term (a matter of more then a few hours) of interuption in their services).

  • if you're using a temporary url provided by the new host and no one beside you know it, it should be ok. You might want to temporary password protect it until you switch the dns and then close the old board so no new posts are made.

Recently one of my webhost moved their forum to a new server and just before changing the dns settings, the closed the old board and it would appear that way until the propogation reached the ISPs.

  • Links are broken? I've seen DNS changes occur in under a minute and have confirmed this from friends around the globe. Some people still don't update for a week eh? They need to get a better browser! ;)

  • Thanks for the awesomely quick reply Kim! One real big question remains, will I have any problems with the url in anything after I change the DNS? I can't afford to have everything not work as soon as I change the DNS because it was set for a temporary site url or not be able to set it up because it will only work on the live url.

  • if you can still log on via the temporary URL from the host, you should be able to continue doing that. One it propogates to the new box, you could go in and change it back to the domainname.

  • Don't forget to read up about Apache mod_rewrite redirects. DNS propogation is unpredictable and there are always a few users on podunk internet providers who still see the old website up to a week later. Apache mod_rewrite redirects can redirect all users who visit:
