ITunes being a pain... help!?

  • So, I have iTunes 7. It has worked fine, but today when I opened it up, it had exclamation points in front of EVERY SINGLE SONG. Even in front of the music videos and digital booklets. All my album artwork is gone, and it won't show up on my iPod either. How can I fix this? It's the first time this has happened to me. What i don't understand is how it says it doesn't have the hard copy for some albums, when those are the ones I bought from the iTunes Store. Help please? I really don't know what to do... =(

  • Don't use iTunes.

  • have u changed the credit card it has been charging to or maybe u didnt pay the credit card so they took the songs away

  • Oh boy, do I completely sympathize with you as that happens to me some times also! I finally figured out that you should have back-up copies of all of your songs, etc., on your computer, under "My Documents/My Music/iTunes". Somehow the back-up copies in that folder were moved from the place your computer originally put them and now it can't find them anymore (don't ask me - I have no idea how they move when you don't move them!!!). What you will have to do - and this is the pain - is when you are in your iTunes Library and you are on one of those phantom songs that used to be there but now isn't and has that exclamation point is, when you click on it, it says something like "... do you want to find it (meaning the song)?". Say "yes" and then it will take you out of iTunes and you will need to go into your computer and go to "My Documents/My Music/iTunes" and you will have to search for it. Depending on how many songs you have, this may take a while. When you do find it in your "My Music/iTunes" folder, you double-click on it and it will automatically restore it back into your iTunes Library and will start playing. You will then need to delete the phantom one. Unfortunately, you will have to do that with every single one. Like I said, it can be a real pain. I actually thought I would get smart a couple of weeks ago and I went through all of my songs in "My Music/iTunes" folder and organized them (and I have almost 5,000 songs!) in a way that I would be able to quickly find them as your computer "organizes" them in very strange ways. Well, this worked well until I realized that my computer was STILL putting them wherever it wanted, so now I have duplicate copies. Whatever you do, you need to make sure that you do have your back-up copies in your "My Music/iTunes" folder and that they stay where your computer wants them because if you mess with them and move them somewhere else other than the place your computer puts them, you will get those exclamation points again and you will have to go through this whole process all over again. Of course, as you have discovered, they may move "on their own" anyway, but at least you will know where they are in order for you to restore them back to your Library, or at least the general vicinity of where they are - you still have to find the individual music files when you need them. Anyway, at least you do have your backup copies on your computer somewhere, so you should be able to restore them....once you find them, that is. Good luck!!!!

Also - all of your artwork, etc., is in "My Documents-My Music" as well. I know my artwork is called "Album Artwork" or something like that, and it is next to the folder for my iTunes Music. I actually created my own folder for my album artwork and saved them in that one folder as "bmp" files - It's easier for me to find my artwork in this folder than the one your computer saves for you, plus I haven't figured out how to even open the Album Artwork folder that your computer saves for you. Just a suggestion.
