XBMC asking for password? (Windows XP permissions)

  • Hi everyone,

I've been running XBMC happily for 6 months, but recently I reinstalled windows XP (pro) - and since then, XBMC hasn't been able to get to my files.

I've shared all my files, and added 'network' to the permissions of each shared folder.

XBMC will browse to the workgroup and computer, so it's finding it - but when i try and browse the computer, it pops up with a window asking for a password.

Now, my main windows user doesn't have a password. I tried logging in as the administrator, but still no joy.

I then read a page that suggested creating a user profile 'xbox', and setting it up with a password. Even when i tried that, and logged into this account, and put the user/password into XBMC when it asked for it, it still won't log in.. It just pauses a sec and asks for the password again.

This is really frustrating me - hope someone can help me out!

    Thanks guys :)

  • If you setup a user called xbox, you'd then also have to add the user xbox to the security and share permissions of the share itself so that user can login.

  • i am sort of having the same problem. the dvd rom on my xbox broke, so i recently added my computer dvd rom to use as the dvd player. All my other shares work fine (music and movies both from my computers internal hard drive, and an external, but the dvd-rom pops up with the LOCKED box and asks for a username and password. i use the same user and pass as i did to add the other shares (i created a xbox login), and it keeps popping up.

anyone have any ideas? sounds like we are having the same problem.... i followed the tutorial on the wiki to the T...

  • kamezzle13 -- Do you have a DVD in the drive on the PC when you are trying to access it? If you dont it will say locked and ask for a user name/password. You must have a DVD in the drive for it to work correctly.

  • yup, ive tried with a few different dvd's in the drive and both my drives only to result in the same box popping up. is this not suppose to be done? if this isnt a feature, then im not worried about, just would be nice to use xbmc to launch my dvd's since the rom on the xbox is broken. thanks for the suggestion.
