Hey, I'm a girl! I can answer this! Ok, we're all different, so here's the deal (generally). Most of us prefer to be asked out. I'm really insecure, so I'd really rather not be the one so initiate it. Besides, that shows you're really interested, which is something a lot of girls worry about. By the way, your question implies that you would try to change in order to be more likable. If someone likes you, it means they like the way you are currently. I think that's mutual, though, since we spend hours on our hair and make up and clothes to get guys. Just be friendly, funny, and do your best to make it seem like you're not looking at other girls.
