Perrigo Company - Case Study

  • Good evening - I am researching information for a case study analysis on Perrigo Company. The class is Business Policy and Strategy, so I am trying to find some information on the industry in which Perrigo competes, who are its competitors, what are the five competitive forces like in the store-brand industry (Porter's Five Forces Model), SWOT analysis, how does its value chain differ from the value chain of name brand companies, what strategic issues does Perrigo face, and what are its options moving forward. I am specifically looking for information that dates back to March, 1993, since that is when the case study takes place.

  • Greetings, taxcrazed, I wonder if you’re studying Business Policy and Strategy at the University of North Texas. I saw the question you asked in a posted Word file while researching. BUSI 5190 Course Curriculum by Dr. A. BarNir, University of Texas College of Business Administration http://www.coba.unt.edu/mgmt/classes/99z/Busi5190.001.doc I also found it as a set of case discussion questions at Hill Jones Strategic Management. http://college.hmco.com/hilljones/questions/case16.htm Maybe this is where is came from. Well, if you need some help in doing this, I’ll try to give it then. Someone did a study of Perrigo Company recently, and his name is Jordan Shapiro. The study is available on the net as an Adobe Acrobat PDF, and it is a comprehensive study of the company. Case Study: The Perrigo Company, research by Jordan Shapiro, et. al. Submitted to the University of New York at Binghamton for CQS 112: Statistics for Management http://www.jordanshapiro.net/perrigo.pdf Perrigo Home Page http://www.perrigo.com Perrigo is a manufacturer of store brand over-the-counter (OTC) pharmaceutical products and store brand nutritional products. I don’t know much about the analysis methods that you mentioned, but I’ll trust my beginner’s luck in this field to put together some short notes. Competitors: Alpharma Inc. Chattern Leiner Health Products NPS Pharmaceuticals Andrx Corporation IOMED, Inc, et. al. (An extensive list of competitors can be found at: Yahoo Finance - Biotechnology and Drugs Industry http://biz.yahoo.com/p/biotrxconameu.html#prgo ) Strengths - Biggest manufacturer of store brand over-the-counter (OTC) pharmaceutical products and store brand nutritional products - Low cost - Extremely flexible to customers’ needs - Compact executive structure - Poor recall in case of bad or weak product Weaknesses - Spends little on promotion and advertising - Weak product recall Opportunities - Began to be traded in Nasdaq around year 1993 - Stay the biggest manufacturer of store brand products Threats - Possibly other, competitively-priced, store brand products - Nature of pharmaceutical market - stagnant, tends to have fixed clients - Lots of competition (Based on the Yahoo list I saw, above) Value chain difference from competition - Much wider range of products and ambiguousness owing to being very low profile, so negative customer reactions affect the company little Sorry that I am unable to address all the points that you asked or get them right since I did not study these business models. I’m a writer by profession. :) While most of the information is based on more recent info than in 1993, I suppose that the basic situation on the company is similar for both times. If it doesn’t, then I’ll see what else I find. Have a good day! Techtor
