Why is watchmen called watchmen?

  • i don't get it and what is the feal with the clock after every chapter with blood running down

  • There was an old saying, "Who watches the watchmen?" Meaning, there are people who are supposed to enforce the law ... but who makes sure that the enforcers also obey the law?

In the book, some of the costumed "heroes" go over the line, doing unspeakable things in the name of "the greater good". Who watches them? If their crimes are uncovered, who stops them?

As for the clock, it was used for years during the Cold War as a symbol of how close the USA and USSR were to destroying each other (midnight would be the end of civilization as we know it). The blood running down it matches the bloodstain on the Comedian's smiley-face button at the start of the book. Also, it represents the blood that had to be shed in order to save the world.

Absolutely kick-a** book ... hope the movie does it justice.
