Find me Biographical infomation on author Patricia Hill Buchanan, who
wrote, Margaret Tudor Queen of Scotland, published by The Scottish
Academic Press in 1985
Hello calder56
Patricia Hill Buchanan was born Patricia Alice Fleming Kneas on
January 3, 1914. After graduating from Vassar, she went to the
University of Pennsylvania, where she was awarded a Master's degree in
1938.
She married Henry Hughes Hill, whose parents came from Edgefield,
South Carolina, and who served as a Colonel during World War II.
Patricia and Henry had a daughter. In 1969 Patricia Kneas Hill
received a doctorate from the University of Georgia. Her Ph.D. thesis
was on "The Jacobite Bishop of Rochester" (Francis Atterbury).
In 1977, using the name Patricia Kneas Hill, she published "The
Oglethorpe Ladies and the Jacobite Conspiracy" (Atlanta: Cherokee
Press 1977). One outline of the book says, "Anne and Eleanor
Oglethorpe, sisters of James Oglethorpe, who established the colony of
Georgia, were heavily involved in schemes to gain the thrones of
England and Scotland for Prince James, son of the last Stuart
monarch." An alternative title is "The Oglethorpe Ladies: An Intimate
Glimpse of General James Oglethorpe's Sisters Scheming to Restore the
Stuart Monarchy"
Patricia Hill Buchanan was a schoolteacher in rural South Carolina.
She became Professor Emerita of history and English at Clemson
University, and in 1990 she published "Robert E Lee: A Hero for Young
Americans".
In Clemson she was a member of the Episcopal church and the Daughters
of the American Revolution. At the time of her death on March 12 2001
she had three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
I'm afraid that even though I've searched and searched, I haven't
succeeded in discovering anything about her Buchanan surname. There is
a slight mystery here. Our author appears as Patricia A. Buchanan in
the Social Security Death Index, but she is buried as Patricia Kneas
Hill next to Henry Hughes Hill at the Clemson University Woodlawn
cemetery, as you'll see in this photo:

I hope you find this interesting!
Best wishes - Leli

The book MARGARET TUDOR QUEEN OF SCOTS is dedicated "To my husband
L.H.Buchanan" do you think the arthur is burried next to her father?
Do you think that Patricia A.F.Fleming Kneas was her mother and also a
historian? 1938 to 1985 is a long time to wait for publishing.
thank you and I will give you $15 as tip but I need the info by monday
3-28 as my report is due tuesday.
Don't worry! You can be completely confident that the author of
"Margaret Tudor" was born in 1914.
It looks as if she waited till the later part of her life before
getting busy with historical research. She was in her 50s when she got
her Ph.D. in 1969, then published the "Oglethorpe" book in 1977 and
"Margaret Tudor" 8 years later.
She must have married L.H.Buchanan after Henry Hill died in 1977, but
we can only guess why she and/or her relatives chose that in the end
she should be buried as Patricia Kneas Hill.
The National Library of Scotland has this catalogue entry:
Buchanan, Patricia Hill, 1914-
Margaret Tudor Queen of Scots
Edinburgh Scottish Academic Press 1985
http://main-cat.nls.uk/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&PAGE=First
An obituary calls her "Patricia Alice Fleming Kneas Hill Buchanan" and
the "widow of Henry Hughes Hill Jr.".
