you have to qualify for it...how old are you? Usually it's medicaid you get not medicare unless your old enough
I am on disability. It takes 2 years after your disability date to qualify for Medicare through disability.
If you are on SSI, you will automatically get Part A of the Medicare. This part will cover a hospital stay, but not doctors or medications. You can get part B, but you have to pay a monthly fee for it. If you qualify, get it now. The longer you wait, the more it willl cost you. My husband has been on SSI for some time now, and never thought to get Medicare because he is a vet on 100% gov disability, too, and they pay all his medical if he goes to a VA hospital. Last year he asked how much it would cost him to get Part B of his medicare and was told it would cost him $140 a month now. If he would have taken it out when he got on SSI in the beginning, it would have only cost him about $60. They add a penalty for every so many months that you do not get Part B when you are eligible to the cost of the premium. You can apply for Medicare in January and July, those are the enrollment months....
It takes 2 years after qualitifying for SSI Disablity in order to qualify for Medicare, in most cases.
If you are in fact on SSI disability then you automatically get Medicare part A or B or, both your choice. When you turn 65 and retire then it automatically turns over to retirement.
